Why study through the Parker Centre?

Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs) are unique to Australia and were initiated by the Federal Government in the early 1990s, to forge collaborative links between Australian industry, research organisations and government agencies. Each CRC undertakes research determined by the specific needs of its participants. The knowledge, understanding and technology resulting from this research are then transferred to relevant industries in order to maximise the economic, environmental and social outcomes. The Parker Centre CRC is one of a number of CRCs working to keep the mining and energy industry sector at the cutting edge of technology.

The joint venture partners of the Parker Centre include a variety of academic, CSIRO and minerals industrial partners who provide resources and expertise to Parker Centre students and staff. This breadth of resources is far greater than any one institution alone could provide. As with other CRC’s, the Parker Centre has a significant role in postgraduate research training and industry-related education. Postgraduate students who undertake their research projects within the Parker CRC have exposure to industry practices and are therefore able to easily move into industry based careers.

Postgraduate students enrolled at a participating university and involved in Parker Centre research, are an integral part the world's leading hydrometallurgy research organisation network. In recognition of the contribution students make to the Centre’s overall research program, students are provided with financial support and access to a range of professional learning and networking opportunities which will enhance their background, skills, networks and competitiveness when seeking employment. These opportunities have included merit selected invitations to the 2010 Parker Centre Hydrometallurgy Conference, student symposiums, workshops and the Parker Centre Annual Science Day.

How to become a Parker Centre Student

Prospective students interested in conducting a hydrometallurgy research project at post graduate level through the Parker Centre, must enrol at a participating university as the Parker Centre does not enrol students. At various times, PhD and Hons projects may become available. Alternatively, prospective students can contact the Education Program Manager for assistance in sourcing an appropriate project and or supervisor. Their enquiry must provide an area of research interest, academic record and resume.

Prospective students must gain admissions to a participating university, before they will be considered for a ‘top-up’ scholarship and should note that full scholarships are currently not available unless specifically advertised. Students seeking a primary scholarship should contact the admissions office of their enrolling university.
